The Tipitina's Foundation was established in 1997 as a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization. Its mission is to support Louisiana’s irreplaceable music community and preserve the state’s unique musical cultures. The Tipitina’s Foundation originates from the Tipitina’s music venue, a historical New Orleans cultural icon that continues to be instrumental in the development and promotion of Louisiana music around the world. The Foundation works to support childhood music education, the professional development of adult musicians, and the increased profile and viability of Louisiana music as a cultural, educational, and economic resource. Four of their main programs include Instruments A Comin’, Tipitina’s Internship Program, Sunday Music Workshops, and the Tipitina’s Music Office Co-Op, which is a network of tech access centers providing business development and job skills training for local musicians, filmmakers and other digital media professionals. Tipitinia’s Music Office Co-Op’s are located in New Orleans, Shreveport, Alexandria, and Baton Rouge Co-Ops serve more than 1,200 members statewide.
The goal of the Instruments A Comin' program is to increase youth participation in the Greater New Orleans area school music programs by providing new instruments. Instruments A Comin' is an ongoing program in its seventh year and has purchased over 1.3 million dollars worth of instruments for over 1,500 students in 39 schools. We are in the forefront of insuring that music programs are available in public or charter schools as they reopen and continue to open anew in the Greater New Orleans area.
Most schools in New Orleans are in need of instruments; however, the schools Tipitina's seeks out are guided by exemplary band directors. Upon selecting a recipient school, the Tipitina's Foundation works closely with each band director, who is ultimately responsible for the success and improvement of the school's music program. Our foundation has played and will continue to play a leading role in assisting band directors throughout the area by providing necessary resources to their schools. Instruments are purchased by our Foundation at a deeply discounted rate from New Orleans Music Exchange, a local musical instrument vendor, and Jupiter Band Instruments. The discounted cost of each instrument allows the Tipitina's Foundation to leverage its purchase to increase the total number of instruments donated.
T.I.P., the Tipitina's Internship Program, offers a small number of internships to New Orleans-based broad-based high school musicians. This unique entity leverages Tipitina's Music Incubator, a group of resources allowing students to be immersed in a music internship. The program is designed to improve skills in performing, recording, and producing, as well as developing awareness of the business side of the industry.
T.I.P offers each participant the opportunity to become involved in numerous recording sessions, and to make a recording of their own, produced by the program's artistic director, jazz musician Donald Harrison, Jr. The internship program runs throughout the duration of the school year.
Resurrecting a program that was popular in the early '90s, the Tipitina's Foundation proudly announces the Sunday Music Workshop Series, the brainchild of Stanton Moore and Johnny and Deborah Vidacovich. These free workshops take place every Sunday from 12:30-3:30 at Tipitina's Uptown, where students have the opportunity to play with and learn from the best musicians in the city.
As many of the city's various music programs have been put on hold since the storm, these workshops are serving a vital need in the rebuilding process: passing on the musical traditions to a younger generation. Featured artists so far have included Stanton Moore, Johnny Vidacovich, Kirk Joseph, and Theresa Anderson. The on-stage workshops are only for students, who are encouraged to bring their insruments, but all members of the public are welcome to attend.
