Renew Our Music Fund is a grassroots cultural community development organization, started in 2005 as the New Orleans Musicians’ Hurricane Relief Fund. Ben Jaffe, of Preservation Hall, and Sarah Borealis, a Ph.D. candidate in History at Tulane University, founded the 501(c)(3) non-profit right after Hurricane Katrina. The mission is to preserve New Orleans’ cultural traditions by providing assistance to the individuals and institutions that will carry them forward. Renew Our Music offers grants to leaders in the music community, extends financial assistance to New Orleans musicians of all genres, and helps connect musicians with instruments and gigs in order to revive, uphold and perpetuate New Orleans’ unique culture. Through the generous donations of individuals and organizations around the world, Renew Our Music was able to begin distributing grants immediately after the storm, disbursing nearly $400,000 in its first three months. To date, this organization has provided an additional $420,000 to more than 1,400 musicians of all genres in smaller assistance grants and gig fees to help bring them home and get them stable.
