NEW ORLEANS | The Bull and the ‘Bot chase each other in the darkness of Voodoo Fest’s mayhem. The Bull shoots steam from its horns. Old friends and past loves watch the pair pass before drunken eyes then fold back into their lives in far away cities.
The electronic second line is a sexual, dark, fun flood of ass-shaking lights moving without reason, cajoling the costumed crowds to revelry on a Halloween night.
The ‘Bot and the Bull are dance sound systems which have been decorated on carts. The cart/dance machines are then wheeled around Voodoo Fest, shining lights and spraying mist.
The DJs who create this movable feast of music are mic Phedusha and Chris Gomez. The DJs explain that while they love the Sunday afternoon tradition of second line music on the streets of New Orleans they wanted to make the tradition “ours.” In Mardi Gras, 2006 the duo teamed up to create their first movable dance machine, the Bull. The ‘Bot followed a few years later. In the future, Phedusha and Gomez hope to add more, “steers" to the herd.
The beats and the jams are infectious as random anybodies begin to dance whenever the ‘Bot and the Bull appear. Hula hooper Florence Farris explains that at Voodoo Fest’s electronic second line, “You can bring your hoop and do whatever you want. It is all about people sharing good energy.”
