Jonathan Freilich - New Music, Old Soul I sat down with Jonathan Freilich a couple of days ago and had a great conversation about music in New Orleans
KOD: What musical projects are exciting you lately?
JF: I am in funny directions lately. I am in the middle of writing a comic Opera. The style in which it will be delivered is a very old style Opera Buffa, but it will be about current events in New Orleans.
KOD: Ha Ha...Well you've got lots of good raw material!
JF: Yes...Well it will be based on a couple of lawyers and their goings on...other than that, it seems that things are going into the realm of songs, so I am working with Alex McMurray again. I am doing folk songs with Alex and (Washboard) Chaz at the Circle Bar on Tuesdays (going by the name The Tom Paines). It also seems that the latin band that I used to have with Manny Lander is coming back. Also, I have this new trio that I really like with Dave Capello (drums) and Peter Harris (Bass). (More)

Jimmy Carpenter: Toiling in Obscurity Tenor Saxophonist Jimmy Carpenter has created a CD of great music that showcases the many styles he enjoys playing, and also, surprisingly enough to those that have never heard him sing, his fantastic voice. Jimmy sings on most of the tracks, and it truly is a treat to hear him. His saxophone playing is, as always, right on the money but it is his singing that really stands out here. (More)

Quintron: Too Thirsty for Love The
New Record from Quintron and Miss Pussycat is truly insane. From the
first look at the album cover, which features Quintron and model
Geannie Thomas both sporting vampire fangs, an enormous boa
constrictor, and what appears to be a frozen margarita, I knew that
this was going to be, as John Cleese would say "something completely
different". (More) |

Walter 'Wolfman' Washington Walter “Wolfman” Washington has been an icon on the New Orleans music
scene for decades. His searing guitar work and soulful vocals have
defined the Crescent City’s unique musical hybrid of R&B, funk and
the blues since he formed his first band in the 1970s.
Washington began his career during the fertile heyday of the 1950s
Rhythm and Blues period that spawned dozens of Number 1 songs and made
New Orleans the recording destination of choice for hit makers like Ray
Charles and Little Richard. Born in 1943, Washington was on the road by
his late teens spending over two years backing the great vocalist Lee
Dorsey who was touring in support of his smash hits, “Ride Your Pony”
and “Working in a Coalmine.” (More) |

Col. Bruce Hampton and the Quark Alliance 11.15.08 @ The Maple Leaf Amazing musicians do amazing shows. On Saturday, November 15th, Col. Bruce Hampton proved this to be the case. The last time I saw him play was at Tipitina's quite a few years ago, and that show was good, but nothing on the order of this tight, funky scorcher. (More)

Groovesect 11.01.08 Blue Nile Late night funk insanity is the
best way to describe Groovesect for this Halloween weekend finale. The
band had the entire Frenchman St. crowd rocking out to the funkiest
licks in town 'til the sun came up. Groovesect, who first
appeared on the New Orleans music scene in 2006, has quickly evolved...(More) |

The Maple Leaf - 8316 Oak St. The Maple Leaf. A music club that
continually has the best line-up in town, because musicians love
playing here. For one thing, there is a lot of history in this club.
James Booker played a regular gig here for years.
The bar is
big, drinks are cheap, and the dance floor is freshly waxed every
Thursday. There is a nice sized bar in the back as well, and a patio
in the way back that is great for relaxing between sets.
The
Krewe of Oak throws a huge Mardi Gras Ball at the Leaf during Carnival
Season and also hosts the Mid Summer Mardi Gras party at the end of
August. (More)
