Roundup: Updates on eve of signing day
Signing day is a day when many colleges lay the foundation for national titles, conference championships and bowl games. Some 5-star rated recruits will prove to be "studs" while others "duds."
There are a hand full of Pelican state recruits that have yet to make their decision final; still others are teetering on the fence with an 11th hour change of heart possible.
Four Louisiana players in the top 50 may not decide until signing day or later:
- Rissean Broussard (6'2-289, 5.0), a DT from LaGrange, was once thought to be a Tennessee lock. Now the 17th rated player in the state is down to an Oklahoma-Tennessee tug-o-war.
- CB Jonathan McKnight (6'0-155, 4.55) from John Curtis has offers from Nebraska, Arizona, Tennessee, Tulane, Colorado, Ole Miss, Arkansas, Utah and Washington. It is down to a Arkansas-Arizona battle which could be decided as he sits down at the signing table, much like his brother Joe did 3 seasons ago. NewOrleans.Com/Sports will be there when/if the #29 rated overall prospect pulls the trigger.
- Evangel WR Eric Thomas (6'2-205, 4.5) had an unbelievable season grabbing 105 balls for 1,553 yards and 28 touchdowns. In spite of those impressive numbers, the only official offer comes from Southern University in Baton Rouge. If that signing happens, new Jaguar coach Stump Mitchell will be getting himself a special player. Arkansas, La. Tech and Texas A&M have monitored the state's 41st rated player closely.
- Deuce Coon, Louisiana's #44 rated player out of Redemptorist (B.R.), has one offer from Miami of Ohio. The 6-foot, 180 pound athlete could be a WR or CB.
Out of the full list of top 50 players in Louisiana, LSU already has commitments from 13 of them while Louisiana Tech has 2 and Tulane one.
As usual, the recruiters nationwide have all swooped into the talent rich state to take a bite.
Former LSU running backs coach and newly-named Memphis head coach Larry Porter did the most damage taking 5 players. Texas A&M bagged 4 so far (more on that later). Arkansas, Michigan, Vandy and Texas Tech have all corralled 2 players.
There are 3 players that have already committed, but things might get a little interesting as the official signing and faxing the papers take place.
Two of the Texas A&M players, Huntington WR Jarrett Fobbs and DT Brandon Jackson from Evangel, are both getting a last-minute push from LSU. Les Miles is hoping to flip one or both. One of those two could be Tigers by the end of the day.
Two players that are still on the LSU radar...
- Markeith Ambles (6'2-185, 4.55) is the 24th overall player in the nation and the 4th best wide receiver in the land. The McDonough, Georgia native decommitted from Tennessee, but has maintained that the Vols are still in the running . LSU, USC, North Carolina and Auburn have all crept into the picture. He has good moves and change of direction.
Also, J.R. "Ego" Ferguson (6'3-275), a 4-star DT prospect from Frederick, Maryland has been hotly pursued most recently by the Tigers and now has added Texas Tech along with LSU, Miami, Notre Dame, California and Florida State on his final list.
Another primetime player from Louisiana, Edna Karr QB Munchie Legaux, has been committed to Colorado since November. But since versatile signal-caller visited Cincinnati this past weekend, the Bearcats are suddenly very much in the thick of things. It looks like a two horse race which could have a photo finish. Once again, NewOrleans.Com/Sports will be on hand to let you know what the Cougars' star does.
Other goings-on around the nation...
- The top rated RB in the country and the 10th overall player, Marcus Lattimore, made a choice Tuesday, pledging to homestate South Carolina. The Duncan native strongly considered Auburn up until the very end. Penn State, Oregon, Georgia and North Carolina were among the finalists.
The James F. Byrnes high school star was the state of South Carolina's top overall rated player. Interestingly, two of his James F. Byrnes High School teammates were the other top senior prospects in the Palmetto state. DE Corey Miller (6'4-227), the 2nd rated player in the state, committed to Tennessee. The 3rd rated recruit out of South Carolina was DE Brandon Willis (6'3-255) who is headed for North Carolina.
Alabama's recruiting class continues to expand with the addition of 4-star OG Arie Kovandjio (6'6-320) from Hyattsville, Maryland (2nd overall player out of the state). He becomes the 26th pledge for the Tide and the 14th 4-star player. California, Maryland, USC, New Mexico and Notre Dame were also in the sweepstakes for Kovandjio.
The #2 rated player in the nation, Seantrel Henderson from St. Paul, Minnesota, will make so coach very happy on signing day. The finalist for the 6-foot-7 specimen are Ohio State, USC, Florida, Notre Dame and Miami. It now looks to be an Ohio State-USC battle. Henderson has great arm length and good quickness out of his stance. He maintains his blocks well and has tremendous upside.
