Tulane looks for first home victory of the season
NEW ORLEANS – Returning from a three-game road trip at the Charleston Classic, the Tulane men’s basketball team returns to Fogelman Arena on Saturday to face George Mason at 1 p.m. CST.
The Green Wave (1-3) have not played in the friendly confines of Fogelman Arena since a season opening loss to nationally ranked Georgetown on Nov. 13. In Charleston, Tulane defeated Penn State and dropped decisions to Miami (Fla.) and LaSalle.
The Explorers (3-2) are coming off a victory over Indiana to close out the Puerto Rico Tip-Off Classic last week. George Mason also fell to Villanova and Georgia Tech in the tournament and defeated Liberty and Dartmouth at home to open the season.
“They (George Mason) have played a very demanding schedule,” Tulane head coach Dave Dickerson said. “They competed with Villanova, beat Indiana and they lost to Georgia Tech, a BIG EAST team, a Big Ten team and an ACC team. I know, playing that schedule, George Mason has come away with a chip on their shoulder and have confidence that they can play with anyone in the country.”
Mason, who reached the NCAA Final Four in 2006 and is a member of the Colonial Athletic Association, came up just short against Villanova, losing 69-68, and lost by eight to Georgia Tech.
“For us, we have to use our positive energy going into the fifth game of the year against a team that beat us last year at their place,” Dickerson added. “We know we have our work cut out for us. We have to play with some urgency against George Mason. We encourage our fans to come out and support us and hopefully we can get a nice crowd in there to help us play well.”
Mason defeated Tulane, 60-52, on Dec. 22 last season in Fairfax, Va., in the only previous meeting between the two programs.
Kris Richard, a junior guard, leads Tulane into the game. Richard, who has scored in double figures in each of the first four games on the season, is posting 14.8 points per game. Junior forwards Aaron Holmes and David Booker are both scoring 10.0 points per game, while Booker leads the way with 5.8 rebounds per contest.
Junior guard Cam Long leads Mason with 10.8 points per game, while Ryan Pearson, a sophomore forward is scoring 10.4 points per outing.
The home game for Tulane is the first of a three-game home stand. The Green Wave host Alabama State at 5:30 p.m. CST on Monday and play New Orleans at 7 p.m. CST on Wednesday before travelling to Bowling Green, Ky., to face Western Kentucky on Dec. 6 at 1 p.m. CST.
