Prep Plus musing - Quarterfinal picks

First, I want to wish everyone a safe and happy Thanksgiving.

Now I want to get into the heart of quarterfinal picks in prep football.

5A- The Thibodaux Tigers have the task of travelling to West Monroe to take on the Rebels. It seems like since Trovon Reed has returned, the Tigers have been unstoppable. I have picked Thibodaux the last two weeks, but I decided not to touch that game.

Instead, I will take on the Central at Westgate matchup, as I will be in attendance. Westgate is that high seed that always seems to end up in the quarterfinals, but at home they will be hosting the "Cardiac Wildcats" who won in dramatic fasion in the regional round for the second straight year. Last year, it was Brother Martin falling in the final seconds, and last week Ouachita was the victim with 20 seconds remaining when Central threw up a prayer on the last play to win. What happpens this week?

My Pick: Central 29, Westgate 24.

4A- I will pick the Salmen-Karr game since I watched the Spartans dispatch Breaux Bridge last week with quarterback Matt Lipham and favorite target George Williams stealing the show. This time it's Karr and Munchie Legaux that's in front of the Spartans in which could be the game of the week in any classification. V.K. Jones will be covering this one for Ken Trahan's Original Prep Football Report, and he had better be bringing a lot of paper to this one if he wants to get all the stats because it is being played on the fast track at Memstas.

My Pick: Karr 42, Salmen 40.

3A- If you wanted to find a game where it could be a very entertaining and close game, this is it. Independence is bringing their high-powered attack to Thibodaux to take on E.D. White a team that counts on their defense to control the game but can score when needed. Whichever squad sets the tone will win this one.

My Pick: Independence 21, E.D. White 19.

2A- I will go ahead and tackle the rematch from a district game between John Curtis and Riverside since people say it is hard to defeat a team twice in the same year. J.T. Curtis has his Patriots ready for yet another championship, but his Patriots are taking on the revitalized Rebels of Riverside Academy led by the veteran Mickey Roussel back for his second tour of duty coaching. There have been some classic battles between these two coaching legends.

My Pick: Curtis 28, Riverside 17.

1A- The South Plaquemines Hurricanes will be rolling up to Oberlin to face a team with a better record. But remember Cyril Crutchfield has his team playing at playoff speed, and the Hurricanes play better when people say they may get tripped here. What do I think about this one?

My Pick: South Plaquemines 52, Oberlin 28.

Last Week: 3-2, Overall: 22-9

P.S. John Curtis is the only Patriots team to win this week; the New England ones have to lose! WHO DAT!
