THIBODAUX, La. - Nicholls women's basketball under second year Head Coach DoBee Plaisance will open the 2009-10 campaign against the New Orleans Lady Privateers in the Lake Front Arena on Wednesday at 7 p.m.
The Lady Privateers (1-0) already have one game in the books, defeating McNeese State 62-53 in their home opener. In the game, Talishia Young had a double-double with 22 points and 10 rebounds.
"UNO returns its top three players from last season, and are a very balanced well-coached team," said Plaisance. "We are very excited about playing our first game of the season, and are anxious to see how we stack up."
Nicholls returns three players from a season ago, while welcoming seven newcomers. Ricshanda Bickham, one of those seven newcomers, is the lone New Orleans native on the team, and will be playing in her home town for the first time since Hurricane Katrina.
Bickham played at McDonough 35 before Katrina, and was forced to transfer and finish her prep career at Franklinton. After a two-year junior college stint at Connors College, Bickham is back in Louisiana playing for the Colonels.
"Rishanda brings a wealth of experience to the point guard position. She is developing into a floor general which is essential to our success this year," said Plaisance about Bickham.
Leading all the Colonel returning players is sophomore Jasmine Hoskins, who averaged 7.3 points and 4.5 rebounds per game as a true freshman in 2008-09.
The all-time series between the two schools is skewed to New Orleans, 21-12, with the Lady Privateers claiming last season's contest, 84-55, in Stopher Gym.
Tip-off is set for 7 p.m.
