Five area volleyball teams advanced to the second round of the state playoffs while three teams saw their seasons end Wednesday.
In Division One, 12th-seeded Destrehan traveled to Kenner and took down 21st-seeded Bonnabel in four games, 25-7, 23-25, 25-10, 25-16 at the Bonnabel gym in the opening round of the state playoffs. Alexis Keller led the Wildcats with 29 assists. Now 29-11, Destrehan advances to meet fifth-seeded Terrebonne in the regional round at Houma on Monday.
In Division Three, 10th-seeded Ben Franklin handled 23rd-seeded Sarah Reed in three games, 25-12, 25-16, 25-16. Sarah Oberhelman led the way for the Falcons with 10 kills as they improved to 23-17 on the year. Ben Franklin advances to the regional round to face seventh-seeded Cecilia at Breaux Bridge Monday.
Sarah Reed completed their season 15-16 overall. Also in Division Three, 15th-seeded Jennings defeated 18th-seeded Brusly in four games. Jennings advances to take on second-seeded Ursuline Monday.
Also in Division Three, 13th-seeded Riverdale downed #20 Livonia in three games, 25-18, 25-21, 25-12 to advance to the regional round. Victoria Techhie led the way for the Rebels with 17 assists and 15 kills. Now 26-11, Riverdale travels to Thibodaux to battle fourth-seeded E.D. White Monday. Livonia finished the season 12-13.
In Division Four, 14th-seeded Pope John Paul II defeated 19th-seeded Haynes Academy in three games, 25-13, 25-13, 25-19. Paige Bourquahard led the way with 11 kills and five aces. With the win, Pope John Paul moved to 12-17 and the Jaguars advance to the regional round to face third-seeded Newman in the regional round Monday.
In Division Five, 11th-seeded St. Martin's outlasted 22nd-seeded Bethany Christian in a five-game thriller, 13-25, 25-21, 25-15, 18-25, 15-10 at the St. Martin's gym in Metairie. Samantha Lang contributed 14 assists and four aces to lead the Saints, who improved to 12-14. St. Martin's advances to face sixth-seeded Central Catholic Monday at Morgan City.
Also in Division Five, #9 Ascension Catholic downed 24th-seed Ascension Christian 25-10, 15-11 to advance to the regional round to face White Castle Monday.
