Released in October 2005, the long-awaited Knife of Dreams was the last Wheel of Time book published before Robert Jordan’s unfortunate death in September 2007. I thought this novel was a big upgrade from the one before it as things actually come to a head in Knife of Dreams.
One of my favorite scenes in this book is when Mat finally asks Thom about the letter he has been reading over and over. Mat discovers that Moiraine sent the letter to Thom before she attacks Lanfear and dies quite a few books ago in The Fires of Heaven. The letter states that she might be alive and Mat and Thom are the only ones who can rescue her from the Aelfinn and Eelfinn by seeking out the Tower of Ghenji.
Ever since Min spoke of how only one of her readings ever went wrong, a reading about how Rand would certainly fail without Moiraine, I had been waiting for Jordan to bring her back. I couldn’t believe it took six novels to get there! Only problem is that Mat agrees to go find her with Thom, but that’s pretty much it. Poor Moiraine!
Additionally, after 1 ½ books, Perrin finally is able to rescue Faile from the Shaido Aiel. Hooray! I understand there was a lot involved what with Galina’s treachery, Berlain’s relentless pursuit of Perrin and dealing with the Prophet but c’mon already! I guess I was getting pretty anxious.
Egwene is captured by the Aes Sedai in Tar Valon and proceeds to cause dissent in the Tower even though she has been reduced to a novice and is forced to do chores and receive regular punishments in penance for her position with the rebel Aes Sedai. She effectively manages to undermine Elaida from her compromised position and bring all of the novices and accepted to her side, as well as quite a few Aes Sedai.
A terrible, terrible thing happens to Rand in the end of Knife of Dreams when he agrees to meet with who he thinks is Tuon, heir to the Crystal Throne of Seandar. If you’ve seen the cover of The Gathering Storm, you’d probably have no difficulty guessing, but it was a heart-wrenching event even though Rand also manages to capture Semirhage (one of the Forsaken) in the process.
This past weekend I finally received my copy of The Gathering Storm and managed to tear through the large novel in no time at all. I will be reviewing it in my next blog, so stay tuned!
