The St. Martin’s Saints didn’t waste any time getting back on track in District 9-1A, shutting out the Ecole Classique Spartans, 34-0, on Friday night at Tony Porter Field.

A match up with the Spartans (3-3, 2-3) was just what St. Martin’s (6-2, 2-2) needed to rid themselves of the bitter taste from last week's tough 18-7 loss to the two-time defending Class 1A champion South Plaquemines Hurricanes.  The Saints jumped out to an early lead over the Spartans, scoring on their first three possessions.  St. Martin’s first score came on a 5-play, 50 yard drive capped off by a 5-yard run by sophomore tailback Parker Caronia.  The two-point conversion attempt failed.

The Spartans’ first possession resulted in a punt, which junior tailback Charley Imbornone returned 55 yards deep into Ecole Classique territory.  St. Martin’s took advantage of the short field, as sophomore quarterback Beau Egan hooked up with sophomore receiver Calvin Black for a 10-yard touchdown pass.  The Saints went for the two-point conversion, but they were denied again by the Spartans.

The Saints continued to light up the scoreboard in the first quarter after recovering a fumble by the Spartans.  Caronia found the end zone again, scoring on a short 2-yard run. On the extra point attempt, the Saints fumbled the snap, but Egan was able to recover and pass to Black for the two-point conversion.

St. Martin’s continued to pull away from the Spartans in the second quarter, as Egan connected with Imbornone for a wide open 69-yard touchdown pass.  The extra point was good, bringing the score to 27-0 at halftime.

The Saints’ picked up where they left off in the second half, forcing Ecole Classique to go three and out on their first possession.  St. Martin’s put together another successful drive, resulting in an 11-yard run by Caronia.  The Saints tacked on the extra point, ending the scoring for the evening.
Despite the Saints’ dominant performance, there were a slew of penalties called on St. Martin’s.  St. Martin’s head coach Frank Cazeaux took notice.  “We just took (Ecole Classique lightly, because we beat them pretty good last year, and we came out and went through the motions tonight,” Cazeaux said.  “They took it to us at times, you know, and we did some things well, but not enough…too many stupid penalties.  My hats off to Ecole, I’ll tell you what, they’re a very good football team. They have a chance to make the playoffs.”

The Saints will have a chance to correct their mistakes next week at home against the Haynes Yellow Jackets.  Ecole Classique will try to rebound against the visiting Crescent City Pioneers
