Former LSU Defensive Coordinator Bo Pelini established relationships while he was in Louisiana. Despite becoming the head coach at Nebraska, he has maintained those relationships. One has paid off handsomely for him.
John Curtis defensive end Walker Ashburn has committed to Nebraska, choosing the Cornhuskers over Oklahoma State, SMU, Southern Mississippi, Stanford and Toledo. Ashburn also considered in-state schools McNeese State, SLU, ULL and ULM. LSU and Mississippi State had expressed some interest in Ashburn but had not offered him.
As a junior, Ashburn recorded 89 tackles, including 11 sacks and had a fumble recovery in helping lead the Patriots to the 2A state championship.
Ashburn will join former John Curtis safety P.J. Smith at Nebraska. The 6'3, 253 pound Ashburn has 4.7 speed in the forty, squats 520 pounds, and sports a 3.6 grade-point average and a 19 on his ACT, according to Coach J.T. Curtis.
"He is a speed-rush guy off the edge. He runs exceptionally well and was MVP of the state championship game as a sophomore with his outstanding pass rushing. He will bring athleticism and size to the defensive line. He can really create problems with protection. He is very intense, a fierce competitor, and takes his business very seriously. He is a good student. He's a great kid and a good get for Nebraska. I think he will be an outstanding player for them," said Curtis.
Having broadcast several Curtis games, Ashburn's biggest assets are his quickness and his motor. He has a very good first step off the edge and plays hard all the time. He is also adept at delivering a quick punch to opposing blockers to clear space.
