New Orleans Saints kicker Garrett Hartley has been suspended by the NFL
for the first four games of the regular season for violating the
league's substance abuse policy, according to sources close to the
situation.
The suspension explains the team's move earlier Saturday to
re-sign former starting place kicker John Carney.
Hartley, the 23-year old out of Oklahoma, was a perfect 13-for-13 in 2008 after the Saints signed him to address their kicking woes in late October. Before the Carney signing, Hartley was the only place kicker on the roster.
The results of the test causing the league ban are not yet known.
