Jewelry designer, Linda Neal of Quarter Past Designs takes a moment to share her ideas on New Orleans fashion

1linda.gifI got into fashion because I am an addicted people-watcher and have always been fascinated by clothes and body decoration. I also love to gossip with my sisters about others' fashion sense, which creates a vicious circle.

As to how I got into making jewelry, stained glass pieces and miniature houses...I can not sit without working on something. And there are only so many scarves you can knit -especially for NOLA. I started with a miniature house kit that was a gift and discovered I enjoyed designing and creating crafts and art. With miniature houses I can interior decorate however I want. I also enjoy the challenge of repurposing objects in all my crafts.

My favorite design is either a New Orleans miniature house or a shotgun "cat" house (full of various types of miniature cats and one bored Storyville prostitute) that I made. In my jewelry, my favorite pieces are anything that is asymmetrical.

What inspires me about NOLA are the sounds. I love that I can hear church bells, horse carriages, trains and boat horns. They make me feel happy and creative.

3jewelry.gifNew Orleans style is dressing for your own enjoyment and comfort. People don't dress to shock but to have fun with their clothing and body decoration. And red hair, in all shades of artificial glory, is New Orleans style. And Muses - where else can you go to a parade and get shoes?

The next cool thing is the next "new" thing (shop, artist, building) I notice while walking in the Quarter. The forever cool thing is my cats and the cats at the LASPCA.

My favorite place to shop is the French Quarter Flea and Farmers Market. I also can wander through hardware stores for hours. It's also amazing how many things I can incorporate into my work.

I sell my jewelry at Body Bistro at 8708 Oak Street. A friend of mine, September Stockstill, opened it about 1 1/2 year ago. Their website is bodybistronola.com. The shop offers a wide range of services, including massages, manicures and pedicures, facials and hair styling/color. I know everyone at Body Bistro and they are all personally invested in making the spa a success. For me, it offers me a place to show off my jewelry. And hopefully, clients who are relaxed and well-treated will buy my jewelry.
