Music Notes

shamarrallen.jpgThere are some great options for drums, dancing and debauchery around town this weekend.

I plan on centering my weekend around the Mid-City Bayou Boogaloo which starts today at 5pm and will run tomorrow from 11am to 9pm. The Bayou Boogaloo is a free admission festival and takes place along the tranquil Bayou St. John at Orleans Avenue, just down the street from the Jazz Fest fairgrounds. This year’s line-up includes Little Freddie King, The Charmaine Neville Band, Rotary Downs, E.O.E (Equal Opportunity Employment), Gov't Majik, Billy Iuso & the Restless Natives, Honey Island Swamp Band,     Soul Rebels Brass Band, Bo Dollis Jr. and the Wild Magnolias, Russell Batiste & Friends and many more.

The best thing about the Mid-City Bayou Boogaloo is the setting. On a sunny day, the grassy landscape next to the bayou is the perfect spot to soak up some funk, soul, brass, rock or any of the other genres of music presented by the festival organizers this year. The Boogaloo was created by Jared Zeller to help restore the Mid-City neighborhood after Hurricane Katrina. Last year’s large turnout was the key foundation for such a great line-up this year. The savory food and art market lining the shore of the bayou are a great additions to the headlining acts. Grab a cooler or canoe and check out Bayou St. John this weekend.

bodollis.jpgAfter the fest tonight, spend some time on Frenchman Street with Snarky Puppy at the Blue Nile at 10pm, they’ll be sure to bring in some local special guests. Afterward head over to Stanton Moore Trio at D.B.A. at midnight for a funky nightcap on the day’s events.

After boogalooing on the bayou Saturday, catch Shamarr Allen at the recently opened Irvin Mayfield’s Jazz Playhouse. Shamarr Allen is a world-class jazzman who has toured    with Willy Nelson, of all likely people. John “Papa” Gros will bring his classic, raspy vocal stylings to Le Bon Temps, while Soul Rebels will bring the party to Balcony Music Club.

All you need is your ears at the Mid-City Bayou Boogaloo so I’ll see you on the banks of the bayou!
