I need your collective wisdom:  I'm trying to round up as many locally baked examples (no chains, unless they're locally owned) of french bread as possible.  So, tell me your favorites...already on my list are these usual suspects--
--Binder's (where can I buy a loaf baked same-day?  I seem always to buy a slightly stale loaf.)
--Leidenheimer
--Hi-Do (westbank)
--Dong Phuong (NO East)
--Chez Pierre (Kenner)
--french-style baguette from La Boulangerie

Outside of New Orleans, Poupart's Bakery in Lafayette has the best French bread I've ever tasted.  They distribute from Baton Rouge to Lake Charles.  I read an article about them several years ago that described how the yeast spores so permeate their bread baking area that it was not necessary to add yeast to the dough.  Sort of like a sourdough starter atmosphere.

GO to Binders Bakery at 940 Frenchmen St to get the hot bread - call them 947-1111 and see when the bread is coming out....that's what I do - nothing like a good HOT loaf.

Thanks, Big Easy---I like Poupart's too, but I forgot to mention that I'm looking for places in Orleans/Jefferson Parish.  Outside our immediate area, I think that LeJeune's is my hands-down favorite.

How about House of Bread and La Louisiane (Harahan)?

hmmm, does House of Bread make a traditional NOLA french bread or a french-style baguette?  Does La Louisiane sell retail--if so, where?  I've only seen their stuff for sale in stores.

La Boulangerie is actually French bread and not French Wonder bread.

La Boulangerie is actually French bread and not French Wonder bread.
This, truth be told, is the only real baguette I have found in the area
