About the Festival:
The Black Heritage Festival (BHF) was established in 1987 to provide the general public with greater access to African-American culture through the presentation of cultural, performing arts and educational events.

In addition to the Festival, projects include the Black Heritage Gallery, Partners-in- Education, Scholarships for graduating seniors, the Black History Hall of Fame, and special performing arts and educational programs.

However, the Festival is the flagship event and has introduced countless number of performers to Southwest Louisiana. Held annually in March at the Lake Charles Civic Center, it is Lake Charles’ largest and most prestigious cultural celebration. Since its inception, thousands have gathered to celebrate this rich cultural heritage.

If you’re hungry for music, food, and fun, then this is the place for you. Continuous entertainment includes gospel, zydeco, blues, spoken word and more. Food booths serve plenty of Louisiana Creole and Traditional African-American foods, including red beans and rice, gumbo, jambalaya, barbeque and mouthblack-hertiage-fest.jpg watering sweet potato pie. The vendor marketplace offers an array of art, books, jewelry, African artifacts, clothing, collectables, Greek paraphernalia and lots, lots more.

In addition to great food, music and fun the festival provides an array of children’s activities in KIDS ZONE. Packed with music, magic, dance, storytelling, and hands-on arts activities, children of all ages will have a valuable cultural and educational experience. Also, there is the ever popular Diaper Derby, Cheerleader and Dance line competition, Strolling Characters and several free chances to win bicycles.

Free workshops are held on topics such as: Scholarships for graduating seniors, food demonstrations, African-American Issues, parenting matters, healthy lifestyles and more. So bring the entire family and share in the programs and cultural entertainment that will connect and inspire you.
