The Jazz Festival Poster – torchbearer of the all but lost art of poster making in this multi-media age – has gone through two broad transformations since its introduction in 1975. With this release, the poster is recreated anew. But there’s a timelier New Orleans reinvention story to tell before describing that one.

2010 marks the centennial year of Louis Prima’s birth. Prima’s contributions to the American music scene are measured by the decade. In the 1930’s he took his New Orleans trumpet and vocal style to New York and Los Angeles where, with his New Orleans Gang, he helped define an era. Prima wrote Sing, Sing, Sing, the Swing Era anthem immortalized in Benny Goodman’s later cover. The success of the Big Band sound led Prima to form a 22-piece orchestra that regularly topped the Big Band Era charts of the 40’s, many with Italian-American themes that exulted in his roots.

What is the Jazz Festival?
The New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Festival, presented by Shell, is a 7 day cultural and music festival. The Louisiana Heritage Fair showcases over 600 musicians on 11 stages, an amazing array of authentic Louisiana cuisine, crafts and art displaying the talents of artisans from around the state and world, a series of educational workshops, and as always, second-line parades happening each day of the festival.

The New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Festival presented by Shell has always offered its visitors a fantastic array of the finest cuisine the state of Louisiana has to offer. The Food Fair offers classic New Orleans staples and over time has expanded to include Creole and Cajun offerings as well as international cuisine. The Festival’s food vendors offer freshly prepared items to suit any hungry festivalgoer.

Visit the Official Jazz Fest Website for more info!

art201.jpgThe Grandstand gives Festivalgoers a chance to take a more intimate look at the vibrant culture, cuisine and art of Louisiana through various exhibits. This year, two photographic exhibits are featured on the 1st Floor. “Backstreet” New Orleans culture is also celebrated (1st Floor West), with demonstrations and exhibits of Folk Art, Mardi Gras Indian, Social Aid & Pleasure Club, and Jazz Funeral crafts and traditions. The Grandstand also houses three unique presentation stages: Zatarain’s Food Heritage Stage (1st Floor East), Zatarain’s Cajun Cabin (on the apron outside Food Heritage), and the Allison Miner Music Heritage/ Lagniappe Stage, located in the outdoor paddock.

Mahalia Jackson, often called the greatest gospel singer, returned to her hometown to appear at the first New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Festival in April of 1970. While attending the Louisiana Heritage Fair in Congo Square (then known as Beauregard Square), she and Duke Ellington, who also appeared at the event, came upon the Eureka Brass Band leading a crowd of second-line revelers through the Festival grounds. George Wein, producer of the Festival, handed Ms. Jackson a microphone, she sang along with the band and joined the parade…and the spirit of Jazz Fest was born.
