Lisa Wu Hartwell
lisawuhartwell.jpgLisa Hartwell is a modern Renaissance woman. A grocery list of activities, occupations, skills, hobbies, passions, companies and accolades precede this Los Angeles native who operates with a self- described "ball of energy". She is many things to many people; a mother, wife, fashion designer, real estate broker, certified fitness trainer, actress, film producer, screenwriter, and painter. A notorious speed talker and chronic multi-tasker, Hartwell's activities have all spurred from one interest to another. For example, Hartwell would often times give advice to friends for hours at a time. After awhile, she realized that she could make better use of her time. She would paint paintings as she counseled friends and loved ones to the extent that she has now created an impressive collection of abstract art.

The bridge that binds her interests together is a vivid curiosity and a can-do attitude that trumped naysayers' negativity. Lisa took this approach to her jewelry design business, Wu Girls Jewelry. Shopping at retailers such as Neiman Marcus led her to design high-end style jewelry at a fraction of the price. After working to make unique pieces and selling them to friends, family, and business colleagues, she even encouraged friends to start their own collections and add them to her online store.

Lisa's first love has always been writing and that has been the binding force for her success in music, television, film, and stage. The baby girl of eight started writing short stories, poems, and rhymes as a pre-teen and by the end of her grade school years; she was involved with a budding hip-hop girl group named "19". A change of spirit persuaded her to disengage from the music industry; even with a major record deal pending and a project with music master Teddy Riley in the works. This change of heart proved to be significant as she moved to Atlanta to "settle down". While in Atlanta, she enjoyed a booming career in real estate and continued to develop her hobby of writing plays. This launched her into a new area of success that would continue to flourish 15 years later.

The play "Change Is Gonna Come" was written and produced by Hartwell and directed by a then, little known director named Tyler Perry. The UPN show, "The Industry" soon followed with a two-year run along with the movie "Black Ball", which she wrote, produced, and starred in. Her latest foray into Hollywood is her participation in the next installment of Bravo's hit reality series "Real Housewives", the popular Bravo reality television series which has resided in Orange County and New York City in previous seasons. It's difficult to realize that Hartwell accomplishes her daily tasks of running several successful businesses, such as “Hartwell & Associates Realtors”, baby clothing line “Hart 2 Hart Baby”, new women’s clothing line “Closet Freak”, and her hot jewelry line “Wu Girls Jewelry”, all while being the mother of three. She cites her supportive husband NFL player Ed Hartwell as being complimentary in the task. She cites motherhood as her biggest accomplishment. Lisa is mother to three wonderful children Jordan 13, Justin 10, and Ej 1. Lisa is fulfilled by finding productivity in any situation and cites motherhood and marriage as her two most successful and delighting endeavors.

"My goal in life is to be all I can be, to inspire, and to enhance." Hartwell said. "I just work hard to use all the time God has given me as wisely as possible."

NeNe Leakes
neneleakers.jpgAtlanta Housewife NeNe Leakes has proven to be stellar success. The Queens, New York native has made a name for herself on Bravo's "The Real Housewives of Atlanta" as the social butterfly that is never at a loss for words.

This wife and mother of two is not your average "housewife." While the former model was a stay-at-home mom with her youngest son, she is now working on two major projects that highlight her talents. As the FOUNDER of The Twisted Hearts Foundation, NeNe promotes awareness of domestic violence and is an advocate for battered women.

"A lot of people think that domestic violence is something that just happens in an urban city or to people of a [lower] income level. No, it truly happens to very wealthy people–doctors, lawyers, atheletes' wives. I know so many atheletes' wives who are abused by their husbands. It's a subject that is very near and dear to my heart."

She is also opening a luxury boutique hotel in the near future. Her vision of a 30-40 room hotel will be coming to fruition with the help of a fabulous designer and hotel investors.

This brilliant businesswoman is also working on a book about domestic violence and a jewelry and handbag line. She is also working her acting muscle as a member of the Screen Actors Guild.

NeNe is a celeb-favorite. Rosie O'Donnell, Anderson Cooper, and Gayle King have named her as their favorite housewife. The vivacious vixen appeared in numerous magazines as the most popular housewife in franchise history. She has also appeared on Entertainment Tonight, Extra, the Tyra Banks Show, Rachel Ray, The Mike & Juliette Show, Good Day Atlanta, Better Mornings and Inside Edition.

NeNe has weathered the storm and remains on top of her game. Her style of speaking is tell-it-like-it-is, real, honest, and upfront. Her outspokenness has made her a success in the entertainment industry. Through controversy on and off the screen, this phenomenal lady has stayed true to herself and always keeps it real.

Sharon Quinn
sharonquinn.jpgStatuesque, poised, graceful, striking...all of those adjectives aptly describe attributes belonging to Miss Sharon Quinn, affectionately known as the Original Runway Diva, due to her presence, style and unbelievable confidence on the catwalk. The 6 foot tall, shaved head beauty is most recently recognized from her appearances on all three seasons of the Oxygen Network's popular “MoNique's F.A.T. Chance,” on which she was runner-up on the first show (owing in large part to her memorable perfect 10 score during the lingerie segment, which left both men and women speechless), “den mother” to the contestants on the second installment and Casting Producer/Special Choreographer on the recent third season, which was filmed in the couture capital of Paris. The groundbreaking show, which caught the attention of millions of viewers, was the first nationally televised plus-sized beauty competition. Sharon graced television screens again in late 2007/early 2008 with her appearances on MTV's Emmy Award winning series, “Made,” as a “Made Coach,” assisting a young lady in her difficult quest to become a model. Sharon's episode of “Made” was not only the most-watched of that series, it also garnered a 2008 Daytime Emmy award! She has also appeared semi-regularly on Better TV, the Meredith Corporation's broadband television network for women. And Ms. Quinn has put on her producing hat for the Relentless Networks' groundbreaking Plus Size TV Channel.

A native New Yorker, in addition to her modeling prowess, Quinn is an accomplished vocalist and musical theater performer. Described by popular Village Voice columnist Michael Musto as “A Plus Voiced Goddess,” she recently ended a long run at B.B. King's Blues Club & Grill, where she was selected to be the opening act for Darius Rucker of Hootie & The Blowfish's New York City solo artist debut. A budding songwriter, she is also busily working on new tracks for her own solo album as well.

Additionally, she is completing her book, “The Runway Diva's Guide to Becoming a Plus-Sized Modeling (or just looking like one). And Ms. Quinn’s popular monthly column in Plus Model Magazine is a must read!

The busy, in-demand Miss Quinn began her career on the local circuit as a plus-sized runway model in the 80's, when plus sizes were a rarity in fashion shows. In 1995, she signed on with the legendary Wilhelmina Model Agency in New York City and began a long and successful career with a client list that included The Avenue, Lane Bryant, Ashley Stewart, Bloomingdales and Nordstroms. She became a familiar face on television as well as in print, starring in national television commercials for Weight Watchers and Just My Size and frequently modeling on ABC-TV's acclaimed morning show, “The View.” Most recently, she graced the runway on “Entertainment Tonight” for Queen Latifah's new clothing line, Curvations, and on BET's “Rip The Runway.”

A modern Renaissance woman, blazing trails wherever she goes, Sharon also teaches private runway instruction to aspiring models and travels around the country speaking to women, both young and older, about the power of loving oneself...first. The multi-talented Miss Sharon Quinn, who believes in surrounding herself with positive people and positive things, is a standout model/singer/songwriter/actress/author—and role model. She stands head and shoulders above the rest.

Malik Yoba
malikyoba.jpgMalik Yoba was an accomplished talent and community activist before being cast in the Fox network television drama New York Undercover in 1994, a show with the noteworthy distinction of being the first prime-time network television drama to feature two actors of color. Set in Yoba's hometown of New York City, its plots usually engage his character, the New York City Police Department detective J. C. Williams, in crime-solving activities with his partner Eddie Torres, played by Michael DeLorenzo, along the rough streets of their Harlem beat. Secondary storylines in the hip, jazzy drama feature Williams working toward establishing a good bond with his school-age son and the vagaries of romance with his upwardly-mobile fiancee, all the while worrying about keeping his son from meeting the same fate as he sees other boys in the city encounter on a daily basis.

Yoba's success on New York Undercover is in part due to his screen presence and the believability of his character, two factors whose roots lie in the actor's assured sense of self. "With his sculpted physique, the six-foot three-inch Bronx-born actor could have easily been a successful model," noted Deborah Gregory in ESSENCE during the first successful season of New York Undercover. "Instead he spent the last six years being a real-life role model to Black teens."

Following a stint in the cosmetics industry, she found her true calling after accepting a position at the US Fund for UNICEF (The United Nations Children’s Fund.) During her three years with the organization, she spearheaded and oversaw the Special Events and Celebrity Relations Department where she created and orchestrated numerous fundraising and advocacy events, geared towards increasing the organization’s visibility and promoting private sector and corporate giving. While still at the US Fund for UNICEF, she made the life-changing decision to dedicate her life’s work to the non-profit world and chose to pursue her dream of starting her own a non-profit organization. After witnessing the sweeping changes in the welfare laws, combined with her love of individual style, she incorporated styleWORKS, an organization that provided comprehensive grooming services and image consulting to women moving from welfare to work. In particular, they are committed to aiding
those living in granny-led and orphan-led households. Along with Hope worldwide and The Salvation Army, she is coordinating Journey for Change: Empowering Youth through Global Service, a program taking at-risk youth and mentors from Brooklyn to South Africa.

As a way to highlight the most important aspects of her career and to encourage others to give, Compton-Rock recently formed The Angelrock Project. The project serves as an umbrella organization to showcase her many endeavors, but more importantly as an e-village where people can find pertinent information on how to volunteer, advice on making monetary or in-kind donations, link to life-changing service organizations, read inspirational stories about people who spend their lives helping others, and shop for products that help sustain third-world artisans or raise money for non-profit organizations. The book contains his amusing yet wise take on college life and what lies ahead for the new graduate in the real world.

Friends of a Feather: One of Life’s Little Fables, a HarperEntertainment book released in 2003, is a collaboration with his daughter, Erika, who did the Illustrations. It is a beautiful story that explores the theme of being true to yourself.

I Am What I Ate … and I’m frightened!!!, published by HarperCollins was released on September 21, 2004, was also on the New York Times Best Seller List. It offers a hip, humorous, hard-earned wisdom on the healthy lifestyle and the behavior behind it.

Fatherhood was launched appropriately enough on Father’s Day as an animated series on Nick at Nite.

Bill and Camille Cosby produced a live action/animated Fat Albert motion picture in 2004. A box office success, the movie introduced a new generation to the loveable character and his friends initially famous through the unforgettable Cosby comedy routines about them. The Fat Albert television show and feature now available on DVD.

He often neglected his studies for athletics and, after repeating the tenth grade; he left school to join the Navy. He finished high school via a correspondence course while still in the service. When he was discharged, he enrolled at Temple University with an athletic scholarship and earned academic honors. His goal was to become a physical education teacher. He probably could have made it as a professional football player, but the world is richer in laughter because he decided on show business.

As busy as he is with his many ventures, Cosby has been a crusader throughout his career for a better world and for better understanding between people. Besides his involvement with a host of charity organizations, Cosby is also an active trustee of his alma mater, Temple University of Philadelphia. As philanthropists, Bill and Camille Cosby have made substantial gifts in support of education (most notably to predominantly African American colleges) and to various social service and civil rights organizations.

In addition, Cosby earned a Masters Degree in Education (M. Ed.) in 1972 and his Doctorate in Education (Ed. D.) in 1977 from the University of Massachusetts. His doctoral thesis was titled "The Integration of Visual Media Via Fat Albert and the Cosby Kids Into the Elementary Schools Culminating as a Teacher Aid to Achieve Increased Learning."

Cosby's been busy raising a family, too. He married the former Camille Hanks on January 25, 1964, while she was still a student at the University of Maryland. They raised four daughters (Erika, Erinn, Ensa and Evin) and one son (Ennis Cosby) and now have three grandchildren. The family resides in New England.

When speaking of Camille, Cosby has urged an amendment to the saying, "Behind every good man there's a good woman." He suggests that "behind" should be substituted by "Three miles ahead." Camille has not only raised five children, but has also been totally involved in her husband's career. She produced his last album and has taped several concerts over the years. She has received her doctorate in education and plays an active role in a number of important national organizations.

Camille enjoyed great success adapting the best-selling book Having Our Say: The Delany Sisters' First 100 Years. First she produced the property as a Broadway play and then as a television movie. The play was nominated for three Tony Awards and the television film won a Peabody Award. Camille also produced a one-hour sociological documentary film No Dreams Deferred, which aired on over 150 public television stations. When Oprah Winfrey debuted her new magazine in April 2000, she chose Camille Cosby as her very first interview.

Donnie McClurkin
donniemcclurkin.jpgAs one of the most prominent figures on the contemporary gospel scene, Donnie McClurkin understands the transformative power of music. For McClurkin, gospel music has provided a sonic pulpit from which to preach and teach his spiritual beliefs. He told ESSENCE magazine, "Through my music, I stress that what's important is your relationship with God. It's not about how often you go to church." It is with this belief that the singer, songwriter, and minister has made some of the most influential music of his generation.

Although he was raised within a religious family, McClurkin's strong commitment to the church is also connected to his troubled childhood. Donnie McClurkin was born in Long Island, New York, on November 9, 1959, to Frances and Donald McClurkin Sr., who had nine other children. McClurkin sought emotional and spiritual refuge in the Amityville Gospel Tabernacle after being sexually abused by a family member at a young age. He became a devoted member, and found that the church helped him deal with his traumatic experience.

Ledisi
ledisi.jpgFrom her name to her music to her mission to the circuitous path that brought her to legendary Verve Records for her third album, Lost and Found, Ledisi is a galvanizing, all-natural wonder. Wherever she goes, she wows and astounds.

This year, during a gala Songwriters' Hall of Fame ceremony, an A-list of show business veterans could hardly wait for Ledisi's rapturous rendition of "Unchained Melody" to end before lavishing her with thunderous applause. In 2006, before a rapt contingent of music business mavens at the Urban Network conference, Ledisi - wedged between a hip hop act and a tweety bird - brought an audience of astute professionals to its feet with an amazing a cappella performance of the Beatles' "Yesterday." Then there was the PBS televised tribute to Ella Fitzgerald, "We All Love Ella," where no less than Quincy Jones introduced her to the stage (adopting her as his goddaughter) where she proceeded to belt out a show-stealing version of "Blues in the Night" that she had previously recorded for the companion CD with the great Phil Ramone producing.

Singer/songwriter Ledisi (pronounced led-duh-see and adopted from the word that means "to bring forth" in the Yoruba language of Nigeria) is the epitome of the performer that - after she earns a standing ovation - people stare wide-eyed and mumbling, "Where has she been all this time?" The lady will tell you - in a voice of equal parts sweet, slightly weary yet triumphant - "Here...all the time."

Three years in the making, the 16-track Lost and Found (for which Ledisi co-produced all of the songs with veterans Rex Rideout, Jamey Jaz and Mano Hanes, newcomer Lorenzo Johnson and longtime collaborator Sundra Manning)is the album destined to usher a deserving talent into some well-earned limelight. Overflowing with deeply touching songs of love and life, the CD cuts a swath through intimate snapshots of relationships that linger in the mind long after the last note has been sung.

Emotions swing from the soulful swoon of falling in love with your "Best Friend" to a liberating acknowledgement that it's time for lovers to throw in the towel on the insanely hooky "I Tried" (featuring Errol Cooney on guitar - the chorus reads: "I tried, you tried / We tried…Time to move on!"). "In the Morning" flows like an old R&B LP a la Stevie Wonder or Barry White, expressing a woman's need for love after the lovin'. On the more contemporary side are "Joy" and "You & Me" that telegraph the bliss of being truly connected to someone. And the smoothly hip hop-spiced "Think of You" is so reverent that it really couldn't be about anything else but loving The Lord.

The first single from Lost and Found is the moving "Alright," reassuring words of comfort, self love and survival that everyone can relate to. "'Alright' came from me just being tired from the ups and downs of my journey," Ledisi shares. "It came during a great low as well as a great high in my life. I was trying to stay positive and feel like, no matter what, things were gonna be alright. Before I signed with Verve, I was writing and recording songs with no idea where the money would be coming from to pay for all of it. It was tough."

Already respected and adored from the cutting edge of today's black music underground, Ledisi has been one of its most inspiring independent spirits. Frustrated at the lack of interest she was getting from major record companies, Ledisi and her friend Sundra Manning launched LeSun Records in 1999 with Ledisi's debut project, Soulsinger. She had ears and necks turning with earthy jams like "Get Outta My Kitchen" and "I Wantcha Babe," but what was most striking was the uncompromised manner in which she covered touchy taboo material such as "Papa Loved to Love Me" (incest) and "Coffee" (domestic violence). Diane Anderson-Marshall of One World magazine marveled that Ledisi was "iconoclastic...to a fault."

Following her 2002 sophomore CD Feeling Orange but Sometimes Blue - which contained her singular approach to jazz for the new millennium - Ledisi's voice took center stage. Like Chaka Khan without sounding anything like her, Ledisi's is a voice that always reflects a reservoir of strength even in the most tender of moments. And women related to it in no uncertain terms. Valencia Stewart in Savoy sang her praises, "It's easy to mistake one of Ledisi's electrifying performances for a sanctified church meeting." Joyce E. Davis in Upscale wrote, "Her voice reaches and aches...wallows and resonates...the girl is just plain ol' bad!" And lest you think the men were unmoved, J. Freedom du Loc mused in Vibe, "she's an emerging singer with a serious jazz jones...miscast in a post-millennial musical climate."

A breakthrough for Ledisi at urban adult contemporary radio occurred upon the release of the 2004 all-star collection Forever, For Always, For Luther - a salute to soul music legend Luther Vandross. On this album, released by Verve Records via its GRP subsidiary, Ledisi covered the R&B master's "My Sensitivity (Gets in the Way)" with such tangy passion that yet another layer of audience began to wonder, "Who is this exciting new talent?" It was at this point that Verve - which had passed on signing her in the past - began to reconsider this versatile talent. But the process took two years.

Composer/keyboardist Rex Rideout, who produced Ledisi's Vandross cover, was instrumental in guiding her through the delicate transition from independent firebrand to major label artist. A veteran who's worked with pioneering soul-jazz greats from player Roy Ayers to singer Angela Bofill, he understood what would be required from all involved to make Ledisi's re-launch a success. "When I met Ledisi, I was floored by her," he states. "Watching her in the studio is like watching a performance. There's a whole lot of music in this woman. The challenge has been finding the right voice for her - with enough of the fire that got her here yet chilled enough to take her further. That process will give her a solid foundation in the mainstream community. I told Verve, ‘Ledisi will be legendary.’ It's her time."

Ledisi took the initiative to bring her artistry to the next level. She left all she was comfortable with in her Northern California support system to take a leap of faith on Broadway. "Living in New York, "she explains, "I was doing things I'd never done before. In Oakland, I had a house and a car. In New York, I had a sleeping bag on a floor in a friend's apartment and had to walk everywhere!" But the independent move paid off. She wound up being pivotal to the co-writing and production of the music during the workshop stage of Oprah Winfrey's Tony-winning stage adaptation of "The Color Purple". Ledisi also understudied Tony Kushner/George C. Wolfe's off Broadway production "Caroline or Change." All the while she was writing and cutting demos in her dressing room, then flying to L.A. - initially at her own expense - to record them properly.

Ultimately, Ledisi created Lost and Found her way - mixing old and new friends in familiar and fresh aural environs. The story was completely unscripted, unfolding in a way she proudly describes as "organic." "The first song Rex and I wrote together ('Think of You') was done in 20 minutes over lunch," she states. "Rex made me feel that not only can I be on the radio, I deserve to be there. I'd already been writing with Mano Hanes, this mystical person who moved up to L.A. from the Bay. After he saw me live at The Conga Room, we hooked up and wrote several songs, including 'Someday,' 'Today' and 'Best Friend.' Then I met Lorenzo Johnson in Washington D.C. He invited me to visit his studio in Maryland where he had all these tracks just sitting around. When I heard the music for one, I wrote 'Get to Know You.' We wrote about 12 songs in four days. None of these experiences were coincidental."

Reflecting on the theme of Lost and Found, Ledisi continues, “During the making of this album, I was in a relationship but not feeling complete. One day I was at Rex's house sitting at the piano - which is a very private thing for me. I never let anybody hear me play. Rex stopped and asked, 'What is that?' I said 'Nothing...just this little song I've been working on for over a year for someone else.' He said, 'Oh, no. That came from straight out of you. We're going to fix that right now.'" That song became "Lost and Found (Find Me)," the CD's title track which Ledisi sings lovingly accompanied by just Rex at the piano and Karen Briggs on violin. "I wanted a Carole King vibe," she explains. "That song for me is what 'Yesterday' is to the Beatles."

Similarly magical was the creation of the under-two-minute interlude "We Are One," a mesmerizing vocal collage sung with acclaimed soul man Rahsaan Patterson. "I recorded it during the same session I did 'Devotion' for the Interpretations: Celebrating the Music of Earth Wind & Fire CD," she shares. "Out of the blue, Rex played this melody and I screamed, 'That's a song!' I wrote the words in the car on the way to the studio. I called Rahsaan to come sing with me, but we only had an hour. The lights were low and we were looking at each other as we sang... Rahsaan is such an inspiration. The first time I saw him was on BET singing 'So Fine' live at SOB's. That song sparked my song 'Kitchen.' I could tell he was an underdog like me."

Voicing her concern about the slicker production of her latest album, Ledisi states, "I worked hard not to lose the essence of who I am by trying to fit into a box. We kept a lot of my first takes because I have to keep things raw. That's also why my original partner, Sundra Manning, had to be on the record." The once inseparable two-against-the-world had a temporary parting of the ways. "Running a record company with just the two of us doing what whole teams do at a label took a toll on our friendship and creativity. I felt like everywhere I looked was somewhere I'd already been. We just needed a break to reconnect with who we are individually. Now we're better friends and business partners. We still own Soulsinger and Feeling Orange but Sometimes Blue. Once Lost and Found blows up, we'll re-release them with better distribution. And we're still placing songs from our catalog with other artists (including the poignant piano and voice piece "Missing You," the title track of soul veteran Peabo Bryson's first CD in eight years).

Relating the story of her and Sundra's contribution to Lost and Found, Ledisi continues, "We were working on a (unfinished) project called Carnivale. I've always had a fascination with Ferris Wheels. It's like the world going around and around with all these people sitting on it. So we wrote a song called 'Upside Down,' which is how the world feels to me right now.” If the world is topsy-turvy for Ledisi these days, at least her love life has found solid ground. "The last song I wrote for this CD is 'The One' which I did with Rahsaan's writing partner, Jamey Jaz. It represents where I'm at now – found - in a relationship that completes me."

Mayor C. Ray Nagin
mayornagin.jpgMayor Nagin's progressive policies resolved to erase the image of New Orleans as place where graft is part of the old world charm. He launched several high profile investigations that resulted in a paradigm shift that unleashed unprecedented economic development in his first term. Mayor Nagin built his administration using progressive, business oriented individuals who are making a difference for New Orleans. They immediately eliminated back to back budget deficits, launched a new city web site that currently ranks as the nation's best, streamlined bureaucratic processes, making City government a viable and accessible force in local life.

With economic development and equity at the crux of his policies, Mayor Nagin set out to jumpstart the local economy, attract new businesses, retain jobs and stamp out poverty in New Orleans. Mayor Nagin's team committed to building capacity for local companies and attracting joint venture partners from outside the City. Creative tax incentive packages, one-on-one business support teams, streamlined permitting, and employee training assistance led to billions of dollars of construction related activity and job growth for the first time in many years. He also re-launched and overhauled the Disadvantage Business Enterprise program to give local companies equal footing and significant opportunities for growth. "The world is seeing us with different eyes these days," says Mayor Nagin. "We are no longer considered just a great place to party. People are starting to realize New Orleans is a great place to do business."

Under Mayor Nagin's Leadership, Hollywood South was created and New Orleans became the second city behind Hollywood for film production, bringing in nearly a half billion dollars in the last few years. During Mayor Nagin's first term, New Orleans enjoyed billions in construction activity, a red hot real estate market, and boom in large scale real estate commitments such as the highly anticipated Trump Tower, a 68-story five-star condo/hotel.

Mayor Nagin also developed a multi- million dollar housing plan to help City employees, single mothers, and low and moderate income citizens become homeowners. The city pioneered with HUD an innovative program where first time homebuyers could utilize Section 8 certificate that qualified as mortgage payments. These tactics were so successful that 37,000 people were removed from the poverty rolls during the first three years of Mayor Nagin's first term in office.

In August 2005, Mayor Nagin ordered the first ever mandatory evacuation hours before Hurricane Katrina, a powerful category five storm that directly hit New Orleans. He led and managed the largest mass evacuation and largest natural disaster in the nation's history. In the aftermath of Katrina and again after Hurricane Rita, Mayor Nagin answered the call of duty to save the future of New Orleans by successfully lobbying Congress and President George W. Bush, securing $6 Billion in federal dollars to rebuild and improve the city's levee protection system. Mayor Nagin also worked to secure $10.4 Billion in Community Development Block Grants (CDBG) dedicated to the region for housing and infrastructure development. He was also instrumental in securing $8.8 Billion in tax incentives, credits, and relief through the GO Zone legislation.

Within 30 days of the disaster, Mayor Nagin developed the Bring New Orleans Back Commission to develop a master plan for rebuilding and repopulating New Orleans. Each committee within the commission was tasked with formulating and designing ways to improve infrastructure and economic development, urban and city planning, education, healthcare, government effectiveness, culture and tourism. After months of widespread community input and deliberations the commission issued a final report that has provided a blueprint for bringing our great city back. That report is today being supplemented by individual neighborhood planning through the joint effort of the Commission, Louisiana Recovery Authority and the New Orleans City Council. The City is well on its way to full recovery and has beaten all the experts re-population projections by more than 100,000 residents.

The political environment in post Katrina New Orleans had citizens dispersed to 44 different states. In 2006 Mayor Nagin ran a successful local race that had a state wide and national scope that defied the odds by garnering diverse citizen support from republican and democratic voters to win re-election to a second term to lead one of America's greatest cities.

Prior to holding public office, Mayor Nagin transformed Cox Communications' local operations from one of its poorest performing markets, to one of its most profitable assets. He holds a Bachelor of Science degree in Accounting from Tuskegee University and a Masters of Business Administration from Tulane University. He is married to Seletha Smith Nagin. They have three children, Jeremy, Jarin and Tianna, and live near Bayou St. John in New Orleans.

CeCe Winans

cecewinans.jpgIf you ask CeCe Winans what drives her, the answer will be far removed from her endless list of accolades, best-selling albums, widespread industry recognition, and vast amounts of press coverage.

She’ll make no mention of the multiple GRAMMY®, Stellar, and Dove awards she’s garnered over the years, let alone the several gold-and platinum-certified albums she’s scored—not even those she nabbed with brother BeBe as part of the hit-making duo BeBe & CeCe Winans.

She won’t tell you she’s graced the covers of high-profile publications such as ESSENCE, Jet, CCM, and Today’s Christian Woman, among countless others, or that she’s made her rounds in the talk-show circuit, making appearances on The Today Show, Good Morning America, Oprah, Live with Regis & Kathie Lee, and more. And radio hits? Forget about it.

When all is said and done, CeCe’s heart lies someplace else. Thy Kingdom Come (PureSprings Gospel), her eighth solo album, is a reflection of where her heart resides: in the very inner court of the heavenly realms, where Christ Himself is enthroned.

“When you’re in the throne room, your focus is just God,” CeCe says. “Nothing’s more powerful than that. When you do other music—positive music, gospel, inspirational, whatever you want to name it—you’re teaching lessons to other people, which is still very important. But nothing is more powerful than when you’re face to face with God.”

Purified, CeCe’s chart-topping 2005 release, saw the singer entertaining her pop sensibilities, proving once again that she excels at interpreting buoyant, life-affirming songs that a wider audience could embrace. But Thy Kingdom Come is different: it finds the gospel veteran going back to what she does best, namely, lavishing honor and glory upon the King of Kings, while rallying His people to live like royal priesthood.

Not one to pick favorites, she says she loves both ends of the spectrum. But something about singing for God and His church strikes a cord in her that not even the most uplifting, stirring pop tune can.

“Singing for God and his people, It’s more home for me,” she says. “I’m most comfortable because I don’t even have to think hard. It’s something I love and I’ve been doing it for a long time. It comes from the heart. It touches the heart. I get lost in His will. I guess I have more fun shouting from the mountaintop.”

“Being on the corner, preaching to the lost, which is what Jesus came here for in the first place, is important,” she says. “But when you just sit in the sanctuary, you’re just surrounded by His presence. You just rest and you flow there”.

“At the end of the day, if I’m sitting in church, I’m really happy, I’m really at home. When you’re outside of that, it becomes more about the call. But when you’re inside, you don’t have to be mindful of other things. You’re just alone in His presence.”
