New Orleans Bamboo Joins Other Local Businesses to Promote Environmental Sustainability in New Orleans

Festival & Events News Releases

New Orleans, LA. December 29th , 2008-- At a December 17th event hosted by Global Green, a small group of new local businesses came together to promote their individual companies as well as to promote the rise of sustainable business in New Orleans. “Sustainable Style: Green Gifts and Interiors” was one of a series of monthly panel discussions hosted by Global Green on issues related to sustainability and the rebuilding of New Orleans. This discussion had a special holiday theme and the businesses involved-- New Orleans Bamboo, Spruce Eco-Studio, Unique Products, Green by Design and Nica Naturals-- promoted their environmentally sustainable products as holiday gift ideas. The usual casual networking of business affairs ensued, but there was a distinct air of camaraderie and holiday cheer, and a deeper invested interest by all parties to work together to help make New Orleans a greener city.

The event is an example of a larger movement towards environmental sustainability in the city. New Orleans Bamboo, one of the premier guests at the event, reached out to Global Green at its inception as a way to promote an alliance between an environmentally conscious non-profit and a new eco-friendly business. Open since July 2007, New Orleans Bamboo specializes in bamboo products but offers a wider selection of renewable resource building supplies and homewares. New Orleans Bamboo expresses environmental concern and responsibility by solely selling sustainable products.

“We drew a hard line when we opened New Orleans Bamboo by investing in selling only renewable resourced products in our store,” says Mike Ward, owner of New Orleans Bamboo, “We wanted to create a business that can make a profit and help the planet.”

Created in the wake of Katrina, New Orleans Bamboo offers new options for the city in this time of rebuilding and renewal. “Katrina gave us an opportunity to rebuild our homes in an environmentally responsible way,” Ward points out. New Orleans Bamboo and the businesses that came together for Global Green’s event represent new options for the city’s residents and a turning of the tide, locally and globally, towards a more environmentally sustainable future.
