Public Schools
This section contains all of the public primary and secondary schools in the New Orleans area. These schools are funded through the state and federal government. Neighborhoods throughout the city are divided into districts, designating which school those children are supposed to attend.

Charter schools are defined as public schools operating independently of the local school board, often with a curricular and educational philosophy different from the other schools in the area. Since Hurricane Katrina, over half of all the schools that re-opened have done so as charter schools.

Private Elementary Schools
Private elementary schools are very popular choices in New Orleans, and they are often religiously-affiliated. Like private high schools, they retain the right to select their students and charge tuition. Uniforms, often plaid, are also usually a part of a private school education.

Featured School - Mount Carmel Academy
This all female, Catholic School was founded in 1896. It is conducted by the Sisters of Our Lady of Mount Carmel, who have educated young ladies in New Orleans since 1833.
