John Vidacovich, Anders Osborne, and Kirk Joseph Maple Leaf - July 17th, 2008
John Vidacovich is the baddest drummer in the world. I love the fluidity of his playing. With Anders and Kirk last night, he was especially intense. He played at a low volume, often using the rims of the snare drum instead of the full on smack that most drummers tend use as their default setting. His solos were impeccable, always staying true to the structure of the tune and playing very melodically around the drumset. He is just an absolute joy to listen to.
Anders was singing and playing really well last night. He seemed very inspired by Johnny's playing and when he soloed was melodically weaving in and out of the rhythms Johnny was laying down. Kirk Joseph, as always played the bass parts on his sousaphone creating a solid foundation for the other musicians. Kirk also played quite a few great solos, and made very good use of his wah-wah pedal. If you have never heard a sousaphone played though a wah-wah, you need to check Kirk out. It is a hell of a sound!
Overall, a great show. It reminded me of the first time I saw Johnny and Anders play together, which was back in 1999, when Anders' Living Room came out. They had a spark then and they haven't lost it...
