June 2, 2006….New Orleans Mayor Ray Nagin is a one-of-a-kind politician. On Thursday, he was inaugurated in an unusual ceremony, marked by celebration, national celebrities and lofty rhetoric. The Mayor included an interesting assortment of controversial speakers for his inauguration. Representative Maxine Waters (D-CA), an outspoken African-American Congresswoman, introduced Mayor Nagin. She was joined on stage by Congressman Bill Jefferson (D-New Orleans), who is under federal investigation for bribery and other serious offenses, as well as civil rights leader Reverend Jesse Jackson, who spoke at length about national issues, using the occasion to argue for more government action for the poor.

Founded in 1974, Save Our Cemeteries, Inc. is a nonprofit organization dedicated to promoting, preserving, and protecting New Orleans' 31 historic cemeteries. Over the years, Save Our Cemeteries, Inc. has been responsible for the actual restoration of historic tombs that otherwise would have disintegrated beyond repair. Proceeds from tours led by representatives benefit the Save Our Cemeteries' tomb restoration programs, as well as educational projects, lectures, and workshops on cemetery preservation.
