STRIP TEASE - Esplanade Ridge

When there were big changes in the dining, drinking and shopping establishments in Esplanade Ridge, no one knew exactly what would happen to that charming enclave.  More than two years ago there was a thriving Whole Foods Market, Gabrielle Restaurant, Café Degas, Terranova’s grocery, and one rendition or another of a coffee shop, couple other eateries and what many call the “anchor,” Liuzza’s By the Track (open and now offering their full menu).  There was a lot of dynamism, good food, a great neighborhood vibration, and it was pretty to boot.  Time, weather events and natural business attrition left some gaping holes in the activity just off Esplanade Avenue on Ponce de Leon, Mystery and Grand Route St. John Streets.  Many watched and waited; I was one.  Today, there is new energy, excitement, businesses and bustle in the area and plenty reasons to stroll, sip and dine…

The Three C's of the CBD

the store2_150"There was nothing to eat down here for a long, long time;  it's so nice to finally have great food in the CBD."  Those are the words of a paralegal at one of the city's bigger law firms in the Central Business District of downtown New Orleans.  Until relatively recently the quick-lunch dining pickings between Canal and Poydras Streets, were slim, very slim.  More recently the restaurant openings have been especially noteworthy and the food is more than well worth hunting out a parking spot and standing elbow-to-elbow with the mass of hungry office denizens.  Creole soul and Contemporary Cajun on Common and Gravier?  You bet.  Sure, Place St. Charles has it's Food Court of standard fare, but how about Indian cuisine, good Indian cuisine?  Yes.  The edible dynamic of downtown is better than ever.  Prepare to drool.

STRIP TEASE - Manhattan Blvd.

Jumbo Salt & Pepper ShrimpAgain this week, the food focus is on the Westbank.  There’s an enormous amount of diversity in dining – everything from Asian to Italian, comforting local flavors to the spices of the Middle East and more – any visit can be a culinary adventure.  The difficulty comes in separating the wheat from the chaff – fast food from food finds.  This isn’t snobbery, a chicken nugget has its place at times; and while there’s solid pizza and Italian specialties at Ditali’s, fine fatoush, baba and gyros at Cleopatra’s, I’m talking homey Chinese, Vietnamese and Japanese dishes; aromatic spiced beef stew; light and fresh spring rolls brightened by herbs; ocean sweet fish, or elegant duck dishes.  Yep, all that is available for feasting on Manhattan Boulevard, one of my favorite strips for Asian inspirations.
