If you were able to make it through the crowds, spanking, and glittered phalluses, Sunday afternoon's Southern Decadence Parade was a costume extravaganza.  Sub krewe's filled with lively gay and lesbian revelers impressed the onlookers not only with their humor, music, and sheer numbers but with some great costumes.  Drag Queens towered over the audience in high heels almost as tall as their hair dos and brought out the glam.  Themed group costumes tickled the crowd with such concepts as "cash for chunkers", leather S&M, and sports teams.

Saturday night's Midsummer Mardi Gras, hosted by the Krewe of O.A.K,. was this summer's not-to-miss costume catwalk.  Coincidentally, the Krewe's 23rd annual celebration fell on the anniversary of Hurricane Katrina as well as Michael Jackson's birthday.  Lady Steppers including the Bearded Oysters and Muffalettas charmed the crowd as brass bands kept everyone dancing through the Carrollton neighborhood.  Queen Ragan Wicker expressed her devotion to her people with an ensemble celebrating the powers of the universe while her King, Dave Corey, paid tribute to the King of Pop.  3000 revelers joined the Krewe in tribute to the fabulous people and unique culture of historic Carrollton.  www.kreweofoak.org.

rebecca-penton3.jpgNew Orleans native, Rebecca Penton has a new home at the Bywater Art Lofts.  Her knowledge of textile design, fabric styling, and fashion styling is the talk of town.  If you’re not sure exactly what all this means, here’s a short description.  Way before the fashion designers ever touch their materials, the textile designers are sketching and printing the designs that will eventually create everything made from fabric from wedding dresses to military uniforms and from car interiors to furniture. Not only does Rebecca design fabrics, but also specializes in developing artistic product lines of corresponding patterns and textures.  Then, after all that, the fashion designers of the world trust their creation into the hands of the photographers to capture it all.  With a fashion photographer, a fashion stylist will be there to make sure the actual fashions look fantastic.  Check out her website www.aminusdesign.com for more amazing original fabric designs as well as advice on corresponding fabrics and totally funky fashion photography.

What’s some of your favorite designs?
I love simple designs. Sometimes all you need is a sparkly gemstone hanging from a shiny silver earwire. Simplicity and quality is my favorite design. I also love rosary linked necklaces. And wire wrapped gemstones that dangle from pretty shiny chains.

How does New Orleans inspire you?
New Orleans is inspiring in its history. The soul that runs through the city inspires me. We have been through so much in this city and we are a culture of strong, unique people. Our people cannot help but be artistically inspired by the soul and spirit that is New Orleans.

1linda.gifI got into fashion because I am an addicted people-watcher and have always been fascinated by clothes and body decoration. I also love to gossip with my sisters about others' fashion sense, which creates a vicious circle.

As to how I got into making jewelry, stained glass pieces and miniature houses...I can not sit without working on something. And there are only so many scarves you can knit -especially for NOLA. I started with a miniature house kit that was a gift and discovered I enjoyed designing and creating crafts and art. With miniature houses I can interior decorate however I want. I also enjoy the challenge of repurposing objects in all my crafts.

My favorite design is either a New Orleans miniature house or a shotgun "cat" house (full of various types of miniature cats and one bored Storyville prostitute) that I made. In my jewelry, my favorite pieces are anything that is asymmetrical.

What inspires me about NOLA are the sounds. I love that I can hear church bells, horse carriages, trains and boat horns. They make me feel happy and creative.

Besides the fabulous music found at Jazz Fest, original, locally handmade clothing may be your best bet for supporting Louisiana heritage.  Much like the musicians, artisans of New Orleans utilize the festival as their own stage to present their amazing creations.

For twenty years, New Orleans native, Alton Osborn, has been showing off his original creations to Jazz Festers.  His line of New Orleans themed guayaberas, dress shirts, linen dresses, and silkscreened bags are all handmade at his studio at the Colton School on St. Claude.  Alton's studio has been very busy leading up to the Jazz Fest.  While managing a small local crew of seamstresses, Alton takes time out of his busy workshop to talk to customers including the who's who of local musicians like The Neville Brothers, Terrence Blanchard, Hot 8 Brass Band, and Dr. John.  When you see his clothes, you'll understand how appropriately named "Second Line Clothing"  has become.  Meticulously constructed clothing with original silkscreens are printed on amazing all natural fabrics that are perfect for looking sharp and staying cool.

How did you get into fashion?
My mom was a seamstress when I was growing up. I think watching her create entire outfits from scratch inspired me to not settle just for what I could find in a store.

Who are some of your favorite designers?
Charles and Ray Eames, Armi and Viljo Ratia, Dan Kiley

How does New Orleans inspire you?
I think an easier question would be how doesn’t New Orleans inspire me ;). Certainly the exposure to things you can’t find anywhere else in Louisiana or the south for that matter.  I guess like the funky city that is New Orleans, I like to create things that are so funky they don’t match anything but somehow they match everything. Hope that makes some sense…

What is New Orleans style?
Funky comes to mind first, like gumbo, a little of this and a little of that, and some how it comes out so good you just have to go back for more..

This weekend's French Quarter Festival will feature amazing acts on 17 stages throughout the French Quarter and it's all totally free!  French Quarter Fest is an amazing opportunity to enjoy the best local acts as well as our beautiful city.  As with any event, dressing appropriately will help make your experience the best it can be.  Keeping comfortable means protecting yourself from the sun and what better way to do it than with a locally handmade hat from Kabuki which are available at Dutch Alley on Decatur St.  If you're really feeling it, bring along a parasol which in addition to keeping you cool will show off your ties to New Orleans culture.  For all you hip New Orleans gents, take a peak at Alton Osburn's collection of handmade linen shirts.  All of Alton's creations are handmade at the Colton School Studio Room 102 located on St. Claude open everyday from noon until 8.

How did you get into fashion?

"I graduated from LSU in Textile, Apparel, and Merchandising. I moved back home to New Orleans after graduation to continue working in my retail job as a manager and decided fashion might not be the way I wanted my life to go. After hurricane Katrina, I began perusing jewelry design. I started reading books and looking at online videos. I ordered everything I thought I needed to make the jewelry I was dreaming of in my head. I then took 3 certification classes in PMC (Precious Metal Clay) and attended Delgado and took 2 semesters of Basic metalsmithing to learn the basics of the torch, saw, and files! Everything I have taught myself by trial and error."
