Observing the JPAS cast perform Richard O’Brien’s Rocky Horror Show brought back memories of sitting at home dressed as Magenta doing the Time Warp with friends and dreaming of the day I could see it live.
My dream came true, appropriately enough, on the Friday night before Halloween. As an excited fan, I shouted at the cast in true Rocky Horror fashion. The cast maintained their professionalism as a barrage of ad-libs was thrown out from the crowd. Tim Curry would certainly approve of Richard Hutton’s performance as Dr. Frank-n-Furter.
It’s very entertaining to see the transformation of Matias Grau III (Brad) and Lucy Adair Faust (Janet) from an innocent, small town couple to sexy hedonists (especially when Brad gets down and dirty during the floor show). Armando L. Leduc’s dual role as Eddie/Dr. Scott was remarkable. It’s hard enough playing one role in a play, but to get into the mind of two characters takes true talent.
Chris Wecklein truly shines as the creepy handyman Riff Raff, although his singing was drowned out a little by the other cast members’ vocals. Brandon Sutton had the hardest role of all as the creature Rocky. I have to give props to any guy who can spend almost a whole play in a pair of gold underwear and make it look easy (especially since it was his first musical performance).
I have to give the biggest thanks to the director, Jerry Lee Leighton, who just happens to be the narrator and the funniest role in the whole play. His interjections throughout added an even greater degree of humor to an already amusing play.
Overall, I highly recommend grabbing some friends and making the trek out to Teatro Wego on either Friday night at 7:30 or Saturday at 7:30 and 10:30 through November 7. Audience participation and costumes are encouraged, though for safety reasons other props are discouraged.
