A short description about your blog

NEW ORLEANS | Orleans Parish District Attorney Leon Cannizzaro and his staff reoccupied the building at 619 S. White St. three weeks ago but couldn't slow down for an opening ceremony and dedication until today. At least that's how assistant district attorney and ceremony emcee Kevin Guillory sees it.

"It's good to be in a comfortable place," he semi-joked, "because as much time as we spend here, it seems like home."

NEW ORLEANS | It came with all of the suspense and flash of a typical Wednesday. What was possibly the most telegraphed mayoral candidacy announcement in recent history went down at Lil' Dizzy's in the Treme neighborhood as New Orleans businessman John Georges tossed his hat into the ring.
Georges joins state Sen. Ed Murray, former state court judge Nadine Ramsey,  consultant Troy Henry and fair housing leader James Perry in what has been an anticlimactic race so far. The biggest headlines out of this year's race so far have been the defections of potential candidates rather that the actions of those actually campaigning.

altNEW ORLEANS | State Representative Austin Badon Jr. has announced he will not seek the New Orleans mayor's office, but instead will run for City Council in District E.

The District E council seat is currently held by Cynthia Willard-Lewis. Term limits are forcing her to step down from the council.

altNEW ORLEANS | If you’ve ever been to a Saints game in the Dome, then you know it gets loud. Last weekend, I couldn’t have used my cell phone even if I could get a signal because the ambient noise was so overwhelming.

So when a video clip surfaced of former Saints quarterback (and current WWL-870 on-air personality) Bobby Hebert cheering and screaming after the Saints scored a touchdown off a Jets fumble, it wasn’t a big surprise.

NEW ORLEANS | Usually our city’s political machinations are written off as either a full-contact sport or the power game of some deep, dark, old-money cabal gathered in an Uptown cul-de-sac.

But it is neither of those. In fact, you can boil New Orleans politics down to two things.

It’s all about the math, and it is all about the fear.

NEW ORLEANS | After going through a process that has so far involved four citywide forums and more than 20 smaller district meetings, the New Orleans Planning Commission has begun to roll its draft master plan for the city out to the public.

Starting Wednesday, there will be several hard copies of the full draft plan on display at locations across the city as well. On Saturday, Sept. 19, the fifth citywide question and answer session will be held at the Dryades YMCA at 2220 Oretha Castle Haley Blvd, from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m.

NEW ORLEANS | Juanita Brooks, one of the bolder and brassier voices to arise out of the New Orleans music scene, died Thursday morning. She is the sister of musicians Mark and Detroit Brooks.

No details have been released for funeral services or about the time or location of her death.

NEW ORLEANS | For an outdoor music festival, rain can be the kiss of death. If you are a new event, it’s even harder to overcome Mother Nature’s temper tantrums.

The crew for the inaugural Project 30-90 Music Festival found that out Saturday, but persevered. An early afternoon cloudburst dumped rain over the festival site, along the riverfront behind Blaine Kern’s Mardi Gras World, but the show went on.

After completing his well-received, 54-city European Tour, Lenny Kravitz, one of the world's best-known rock performers, returns to the U.S. to celebrate the 28th anniversary of his debut album, “Let Love Rule.” His will be the closing performance at New Orleans' Voodoo Music Experience on Sunday, November 1st.

Kravitz will join the Halloween weekend celebration which flaunts the bohemian nature of New Orleans, his part-time home. Kravitz is known for his signature sound, music flavored with a combination of classic rock, soul, funk and pop.  Material from Kravitz's 20-year music career will be included at the festival.

It seems the rest of the world has finally figured out what we already knew here in New Orleans. Other cities can say what they want about music, but New Orleans is the place to go if you want it live.

The Society of American Travel Writers (SATW), the world’s largest organization of professional travel journalists and photographers, published its Top 10 best North American cities for live music. New Orleans beat out the second place entry, New York City, by a nearly two-to-one margin.
