Local Malls |
|
Some places have malls to make a would-be shopper go comatose with their run-of-the-mill stores and humdrum entertainment options; here in New Orleans, though, we've got exciting and unique options from the Mississippi to the Lakefront. From the always-changing Clearview Mall with restaurants and a 12-cinema theatre, to the Esplanade with a brand-new Macy's if you're out in Kenner. There's fashionable fun (and fudge) at The Riverwalk, the stylish Shops at Canal Place, the unusual finds of the French Market and, if you're heading outside of city limits, there's the huge Mall of Louisiana and the bargain-shopper's dream, Tanger Outlets. Suffice it to say, New Orleans has some of the most unique shopping in the country. Where else would you find a collection of glass eyes, estate jewelry dating back to the 1800's or Confederate cash for sale? Just click on a mall below to see what's in store for you!

French Quarter Shopping |
 |
Royal Street Shopping |
The French Quarter is world-renowned for many things, and although shopping comes to mind less often than, say, risque nightclubs, it's a more than worthy cause for a visit. The streets are filled with artists, boutiques, galleries, street vendors and charming eateries. It would take more than a weekend to discover all that those cobblestoned streets have to offer, and then, just when you think you've seen it all, you arrive at the Flea Market! (More)

Royal Street is recognized as one of the best antiquing spots in the world, and many of its galleries are owned by third and fourth-generation owners, proud to sell nothing but the finest from centuries past. Stroll the seven glorious blocks between Canal and Esplanade and discover furniture, chandeliers, marble and bronze statues, rugs, porcelains and antique weapons. You're bound to find more than just a few things you "absolutely have to have." (More) |

Oak Street Shopping |
The six miles of Magazine Street, stretching from the bend of the river all the way to the Warehouse District, are known as the "Street of Dreams" to locals and visitors alike. It's got funky vintage shops, cute clothing boutiques, spas and salons with beautiful gift shops and houseware stores you'll want to live in. The youthful, bohemian vibe of the street is infectious, and it only gets better when the sun goes down, with bars and restaurants aplenty. (More)

A walk down Oak Street feels like a walk down Main Street in the 50's. Everyone knows each other and stops to talk on street corners, the shops have open doors and striped awnings. Don't be fooled into thinking it's Pleasantville, though. The fact that Oak Street has soul is obvious from the young families who call the neighborhood home and the constant influx of new shops and restaurants. Discovering Oak Street would be the perfect way to while away a lazy Saturday. (More) |

Buy Local: Weekend Art Markets |
|
Freret Street, Markey Park and Palmer Park all have one thing in common: They are all radically transformed one weekend of every month into awesome open-air art markets! Vendors man their booths with pride, ready to shake hands with potential customers, explain their latest artwork or give away (some of) the secrets of how they make their handmade soap smell so amazing. There's always tons of jewelry, neat woodworking, the occasional pottery purveyor and on special Saturdays, demonstrations from the artists themselves. There are local musicians and local food, and it's impossible not to find a great gift for any and all of your friends and family.

Purple This autumn, purple can be found absolutely everywhere, from men's ties to women's dresses, to pretty high-heels, accessories, even on furniture! The oft-neglected color has been popular on the runways since the fall lines of 2006, but since it always takes a few seasons to trickle down to the rest of us, it's really just in full swing now.
The traditional royal color can be flattering on anyone if they find the right shade of it. The palest of lavenders can lend blondes with fair skin an innocent and icy look, while more jewel-toned purples flatter red-heads and those with darker skin tones. The boldest of plums can almost be treated as a black or a brown, a neutral that can be paired with many other colors, and it results in a slimming effect.
If you're not sure about wearing a purple sweater or picking a violet dress for that nighttime winter wedding, think about it in smaller doses. Just a bit of the opulent hue will perk up one of your all-black, all-blah winter outfits and make it pop.
It also ties in perfectly with the rich hues of fall's color palette, making it a perfect choice for a Thanksgiving dinner or for picking pumpkins.
Real stand-out items in this season's most popular color are purple suede boots, plum leather jackets to pair with dark jeans and beautiful violet scarves and coats. So don't be timid; purple really can work for everyone. And here in New Orleans, you'll be set all the way through Mardi Gras!
