The 4th Annual 504 What Style Rock Art Circus shines a spotlight on the New Orleans’
underground Rock-Art Scene on Saturday,
August 7, 2009, at The Three Ring Circus,
1638 Clio Street.
504 What Style Rock Art Circus anticipates more fans than ever before. This is a special year because it falls after Samhain and Dia de los Muertos, when the city is resting after Voodoo Fest and Halloween. This will also mark the first year that young, budding artists will be showing their work. Williams has opened this year’s entries to artists from age 5 and up.
When other galleries in New Orleans would not accept artist L. Steve Williams, Jr.’s style of "lowbrow" or "erotic” art, he formed his own show to showcase his work along with other up-and-coming underground artists. "From the start of my rock-art adventure I've been helping kids make their rock-n-roll dreams come true. By helping them structure and embrace their artistic powers," states Williams.
Working with the do-it-yourself and guerrilla promotional tactics that had already gotten his art recognized in the underground art world of New Orleans, Williams partnered up with The Big Top Gallery. And the 504 What Style Rock Art Circus was born!
504 What Style Rock Art Circus was based on a foundation, or movement, of people supporting the underground art and music scene. The bands, promoters, fans and artists created this scene to keep the rock-n-roll culture alive in New Orleans.
Highlights of the show included artwork created by some of Williams’ favorite musicians. Many famous Rock-N-Roll stars have shown their artistic side by being a part of the show.
Exene, of the historic L.A. Rock band X, Dave Chandler of Saint Vitus, and Jimmy Bower of Down, just to name a few. This year proves to be as exciting with artwork from Mark Mothersbaugh of Devo fame.
Music by Suplecs, Manwitch & The Unnaturals.
Also this year the street will be blocked off with craft vendors and performance artists!
Be apart of the Rock Art Circus by dressing up in your rock-horror-circus attire!
So on November 7, 2009,
come embrace the art, the music and the oddities of the underground art show
504 What Style Rock Art Circus!
