A Round with Ryan

There are three things I look for in a person. These three things define whether or not that person is worth my energy or time getting to know. The first thing is a having a genuine desire to be kind, the second is intelligence and the third is dedication to themselves and the things and people they love and care about. These three things are the reasons that I adore Bff Dore, overlook the bad habits of Bff Black Out Drunk Debbie, will always beg for forgiveness from Bff Twester (even when I am right), and no matter how long it has been since I have seen Bff Ginger Cherry, she still feels like family.

Some people might say that impressing me is not an easy task to accomplish. But I guess the truth would be that impressing me is rather an easy task to accomplish, it is my showing that I am impressed that is the hard part. Why even you, my readers, have called me insecure when I write about things from the heart and about being impressed with people. You find me more sincere when I am telling you how the brush strokes of a painting changed my attitude towards a certain medium rather than how a couple of horses and a man following his dreams impacted me. You yourselves know, that I am not the kind of person to gush with excitement or praise for people in general. It just isn’t my style.

So hold on to your ferry passes, because my Number #1 RyRy Hotpick for the Gretna Heritage Festival is…the amazing PEOPLE OF GRETNA.

From the coordinators of the festival to the restaurant owners and patrons, the people of Gretna practice what I refer to as an “open arm policy”.  You meet them and they do what good Southerners do, they hug you. That’s right, a big hello hug from a perfect stranger. Usually this would send me back a few steps, but the genuine sincere nature in which they are saying hello is so warm, you do not realize that you are actually hugging someone that you hardly know. And the hardly know part is very temporary, mere moments after meeting them, you will surely feel like you have known them a long, long time. Upon arrival, I am sure you see that not only is this a little town in a big city, but it is a little family in a big city.

But, perhaps you will get a better feel for the people of Gretna by just looking around at the clean streets, the freshly painted buildings and the attention to detail that you only see when a group of people are as dedicated to a place they love as they are to themselves.

So go ahead and “jump the ditch to enjoy my RyRy Number 1 Hotpick for Gretna Fest…THE PROPLE OF GRETNA.”

And as far as my insincerity, this morning I packed a toothbrush and I’ll be spending the weekend in Gretna for the fest.  As I ran out of the house, I grabbed the real estate section; the idea of “jumping a ditch” has never looked so good.
