French Quarter & Marigny
Club Decatur
240 Decatur St.
This is where the local bartenders, waitresses, and bell-hops go after work. Good all-around prices, such as a $3.00 jumbo Evan Williams and Coke. Good pizza also. 581-6969
Lafitte's Blacksmith Shop
941 Bourbon St. (at St. Philip)
Apparently the money Lafitte’s saves by not having lights gets passed on to its customers. The historic building is dark – lit only by candles – and mixes great drinks for a good price.
Molly's at the Market
1107 Decatur St.
A refuge from the tourist scene, Molly’s has drink specials and the “Frozen Coffee” to help you battle the sweltering summers. 566-0630
Funky Pirate
727 Bourbon St
This place has three drinks with great bang-for-your-buck. The Horny Gator, Hand Grenade, and the Tropical Itch will get you wings faster than a Red Bull…just make sure you don’t get gored by the hangover fairy in the morning. 523-1960
Gold Mine Saloon
705 Dauphine St.
$2 Flaming Dr. Peppers are the highlight at this big bar and dance club. Don’t go before 11 PM or it’ll just be you and the dog. 586-0745
Garden District / Uptown
Ms. Mae's (aka: The Club)
4336 Magazine St. (at Napoleon)
Ms. Mae’s is where Archie Bunker would hang out in New Orleans. They proudly serve Dixie beer along with specials and their regular cheap drinks. Wednesday night it’s two-for-one mixed drinks $1 each - rotgut grade. NewOrleans.com staff certifies this as a wretched hive of scum-baggery, but a lot of fun. 895-9401
Igor’s Lounge
2133 St. Charles Ave.
Located within stumbling distance of thousands of hotel rooms AND on the streetcar route AND located on a major Mardi Gras parade route, Igor’s is a real New Orleans-strength bar. It’s open 24 hours, has video poker, pool tables, seating on the front sidewalk, and is a full-service Laundromat. A sign on the wall informs patrons of drink specials from 5-7 AM. Yes, AM. As in, the morning.
Cooter Browns
509 S. Carrollton Ave. (at St. Charles Ave)
Cooter Brown’s is popular with the local college folks, which means it’s crowded most nights, has cheap drinks, and plenty of beers on tap. 866-9104
Balcony Bar
1104 Harmony St. (at Magazine)
The Balcony Bar has great drink specials every night, killer bar food (burgers, gyros, and even salads), an internet-connected jukebox, and yes, a great balcony. On hot nights, you can’t beat sitting on the balcony and catching what little wind blows through New Orleans. 895-1600
Mid-City
Nick's - (extra seedy)
2400 Tulane Ave (at S. Tonti St.)
One of the last few places in the world where you can still get Dixie beer on tap. Nick’s earns a rating of “extra seedy” from the sketchy neighborhood, the smoke, and holes in the ceiling in the back room. Self-proclaimed slogan is “Looks like the oldest bar in New Orleans.” 821-9128
Dixie Tavern
3340 Canal St. (near Jeff. Davis Parkway)
Their happy hours have daily specials on beer. But they also have drink specials every night except Saturday, usually ranging from $1 to $3 drinks. 822-8268
New Orleans East
Vaughan’s
800 Lesseps St. (at Dauphine)
New Orleans East is home to famous music halls, musicians, and ol’ fashioned gin joints. Vaughan’s Lounge has all of the above, plus free red beans and rice on Mondays. Take a taxi because the neighborhood is dodgy.
